| Expressionist painter Cindy Goode Milman spent a year visiting Sydney’s coastal saltwater pools to
discover a soulful slice of Australian life.
Originally from Canada, Milman became fascinated by the micro-communities that exist around the
country’s coastal swimming holes.
“The actual way people interacted with the pools and the love they have of them, how it was a
morning ritual or a sport, a weekend thing with the kids, or to gain perspective on life, just the general interaction around these pools was incredible,” she said.
Of the string of pools from Palm Beach to Coogee where Milman spent her days, she said Wiley’s Baths at Coogee was the most inspirational.
“I adore the pathway when you hit the front with those blue-and-white stripes and the writing; you
don’t know what world you are entering.
“Then you come around the corner to the caretaker’s cottage with that cat and it’s like being brought back in time. “It’s just majestic - there’s no other word for it.
“One of my paintings is the Wiley’s structure alone under the moonlight and I felt like it was alive.”
Milman will exhibit her collection of seaside paintings alongside photographs by Ian Lever as part of the
“Saltwater” exhibition from November 25 to December 31 at Meyer Gallery, 269 Bourke St,
Darlinghurst.
